Why Your Email List Stopped Growing (and how to change it)

Uncategorized May 26, 2026

Why is your email list barely growing? Learn why your current strategies stall list growth and how a virtual summit changes everything.

Have you been consistently creating content, showing up on social media, and trying everything the experts recommend to grow your email list and it's just kind of...  fine?

Growing by a trickle of a couple people per day when you're putting in real effort is one of the most frustrating places to be in business. You're not doing anything wrong. But there's a very specific reason it's not working - and more importantly, a very specific way to fix it!

In this episode, I'm breaking down exactly why your list growth has stalled, why the strategies most people rely on are actually designed for slow growth, and why summits continue to break through when everything else leaves you stuck.

Why Your Email List Growth Has Stalled Out

First of all: none of this is your fault.

The strategies most people use to grow their lists - social media, SEO, referrals, podcast guesting - are what the experts teach. The problem is, those same experts are spending tens of thousands of dollars per month on ads to keep their own lists growing. You're not in that position, and you shouldn't have to be!

So what's actually happening when your list growth slows to a trickle?

You're creating content for people who already know you.

Your emails go to people already on your list. Your social media posts aren't gaining you many new email subscribers unless a post goes unexpectedly viral. The bulk of your effort is just going to reach the same audience you already have, not to grow your audience.

Your current strategies are slow-growth by design.

Social media is a slow-growth strategy (unless you're in a viral niche or get lucky). SEO is a well-known long game. Podcast guesting might bring in a handful of new leads here and there. None of these things are bad - building them over time is genuinely worthwhile - but if you're feeling stuck right now, doing more of the same isn't going to change anything.

You've moved past the stage where consistency alone is the strategy.

Most list-building advice is created for beginners. But you're not a beginner anymore. And that's the gap nobody talks about. What you're using has shifted from a growth strategy to a maintenance strategy - and it probably feels more productive than it actually is.

The Math That Shows What You're Missing with List Growth

Let's say your current strategies are bringing in about 20 new subscribers per week. That's around 1,000 new people per year. At a 5% conversion rate, that's around 50 new buyers annually from that list growth.

Now consider this: clients in the Summit in a Box community average somewhere between 2,000 and tens of thousands of new subscribers from a single summit - within about a two-week window. Using the conservative end of that range, 2,000 new subscribers at a 5% conversion rate is 100 new buyers in two weeks!

And this isn't happening in business niches only. We're seeing these kinds of results in niches like backyard chickens, crochet, AI, and elementary music education.

Why Summits Grow Your Email List When Everything Else Has Left You Stuck

The core reason summits produce such dramatically different results comes down to one thing: a summit is the only strategy that pays you to borrow other people's audiences.

Speakers are set up to benefit from participating - but you are genuinely getting promoted to someone else's audience, often while generating revenue at the same time. And beyond that, it's not just another "join my list for a free guide" offer. It's a specific, exciting, time-bound reason for someone new to show up and opt in.

That combination is what creates the kind of word-of-mouth referrals that evergreen content simply can't generate.

For example, my client Hortense - who you can hear from in episode 302 - wouldn't have described herself as a marketing expert going into her first summit. But it brought in 6,273 new subscribers, $31,000 in revenue, and 188 new members in her membership!

My client Heather, who you can hear from in episode 278, had made only $8,000 the entire previous year and felt like nothing was working. Her first summit brought in 5,500 registrations, $30,000 in immediate revenue, and 260 new members into her membership.

These numbers can feel almost unbelievable (I promise they're not) - but they're the result of intentional summit design, not luck.

What Hosting a Summit "the Right Way" Actually Means

Maybe you've heard that summits don't work. Maybe you even hosted one yourself that didn't land the way you hoped. When a summit falls flat, it's almost always a design problem - not a summit problem.

Three things make a summit actually grow your list:

  • A specific and compelling topic. "The Ultimate Photography Summit" isn't going to cut it. The more specific and targeted your topic, the more it will resonate with exactly the right people.
  • A speaker strategy built around audience crossover, not just credibility. You could fill your summit with the biggest names in your industry and it could still flop - because big names often don't promote. The right speakers are the ones who share your target audience and show up with genuine enthusiasm.
  • A monetization strategy designed to lead people directly to your offer. Don't do paid tickets. Give them more than just a basic all-access pass. Every piece of your summit needs to be designed to move people naturally toward what you sell!

You can absolutely host a summit that works. You just need the right pieces in place.

The Bottom Line?

You're not stuck because your offers aren't good enough, your niche doesn't work, or you're not working hard enough. You're stuck because the strategies you're using aren't designed to grow an audience.

One summit (done right) can add more people to your list than an entire year of content creation.
